The American Basketball Association (ABA) announced that it will officially begin the ABA summer basketball league with participating teams playing a 12 game schedule starting in June.
“This has been a long time coming,” stated ABA CEO Joe Newman. “With nearly 2000 players in the ABA, so many have been asking us to create a summer league following our regular ABA season. We’ve tried it a couple of times before, but didn’t seem to have the right management to follow through on all of the details necessary. We do now.”
The ABA Summer League will be managed by a trio of experienced ABA team owners and executives including Tjuan “Benafactor” Washington, CEO of ABA Media & Entertainment, Brian “Essince” Collins, CEO of Royal Heir Entertainment and head of ABA Fusion, and Ace Pippens, owner of the Steel City Yellow Jackets. “We’re going to structure the ABA Summer League like the ABA with different regions,” added Washington. “The top teams in each region will advance to the playoffs. The season will run from June 6-August 16. Aside from trophies, Regional Champions will receive a cash prize.
The league is open to all teams, not just current ABA teams. The ABA is also planning to use the Summer League as a training platform for officials interested in joining the ABA. Registration has already begun in Florida, parts of the Midwest, and west coast.
